The work of Wesley Willis invites giggling discussions of comedy, and mental illness. Music shared endlessly between myself and teenage peers for its vulgarity later took on a raw, authentic shape as I aged into an empathy of what the mind- and its various conditions we know about - does to its host artist. It is nothing short of a miracle that this man could live the daily burdens of schizophrenia and give us this jawdropping collection of profoundly human, disturbed, honest, vulgar, oddly poetic works.
